Book the big sights ahead
The Colosseum, the Vatican Museums and the Borghese Gallery sell timed tickets that often sell out. Book online a few days ahead, and for the Borghese, earlier.
Cover shoulders and knees in churches
St Peter's and most Roman churches turn away visitors in shorts above the knee or with bare shoulders. Carry a light scarf.
Plan day trips by train
Ostia Antica is about 40 minutes by train from Piramide station, and Tivoli, with Villa d'Este and Villa Adriana, is about an hour from Roma Tiburtina.
