How many days do you need in Milan? Four days is enough to see the main sights, the big museums and the local neighbourhoods without rushing. This 4-day Milan itinerary stays in the city and covers one area per day, so every day is a short walk between nearby stops.

Day 1 is the historic centre and the fashion streets: the Duomo and its rooftops, the Galleria, Piazza della Scala, Via Montenapoleone and Via della Spiga. Day 2 is Brera, the castle and the park: the Pinacoteca di Brera, Castello Sforzesco, Parco Sempione and drinks by the Arco della Pace.

Day 3 is The Last Supper and the canals: Santa Maria delle Grazie, the Basilica of Sant'Ambrogio, the Colonne di San Lorenzo, the Darsena and dinner on the Naviglio Grande. Day 4 is modern Milan: Corso Como, Piazza Gae Aulenti, BAM park, the Bosco Verticale and dinner in Isola.

Day 1

  1. Start here · Attraction · Cathedral

Terraces daily 9:00 to 19:00 (last entry 18:00)

Milan Cathedral is the city's number one sight, a white marble Gothic church begun in 1386 with 135 spires. Arrive at 8:00 for photos of the façade before the square fills up. The cathedral and the rooftop terraces open at 9:00. Go up by stairs or lift to walk among the spires and see the gold Madonnina statue up close.

Tip: Book a timed rooftop ticket online. Shoulders and knees must be covered to enter the cathedral.

Next to the Duomo, this glass-roofed arcade from the 1860s and 1870s is one of the oldest shopping galleries in the world. Walk under the central dome, look at the mosaic floor and window shop the luxury brands. Entry is free and it is open around the clock.

Tip: Walk through the arcade to reach Piazza della Scala.

  3. Stop 3 · Attraction · Square

Walk out the north end of the Galleria into Piazza della Scala. In the middle stands the 1872 statue of Leonardo da Vinci with four of his pupils. On one side is Teatro alla Scala, Milan's world famous opera house, and opposite is Palazzo Marino, the city hall. The La Scala museum lets you see costumes and instruments and, when there is no rehearsal, look into the theatre from a box.

  4. Stop 4 · Area · Shopping street

  1. Stop 10 · Attraction · Church and museum

Leonardo da Vinci's Last Supper is painted on the wall of the refectory in the convent next to the church of Santa Maria delle Grazie, and it has its own timed, ticketed entry. The Renaissance church itself, with its dome by Bramante, is free to enter.

Tip: The Last Supper is closed on Mondays. Arrive 15 minutes before your time slot.

Good to know

Book The Last Supper first
It is the hardest ticket in Milan. Build Day 3 around your time slot.
Avoid Mondays for museums
The Pinacoteca di Brera, the Sforzesco Castle museums and The Last Supper are closed on Mondays. Use Monday for Day 1 or Day 4.
Use the metro between days
Each day is a short walk, but the days start in different parts of the city. Cadorna or Conciliazione (M1) are close to The Last Supper, and Garibaldi FS (M2 and M5) is at the start of Corso Como.
Want a day trip?
This plan stays in Milan. If you add a fifth day, Lake Como is about an hour away by train. See our one-day Lake Como ferry itinerary.
