The 15 day trips

Fastest direct train from Milan

What are the best day trips from Milan by train? Bergamo, Como, Verona, Turin and Bologna are the most popular, and every town on this map has a direct train from Milan, so you never need to change. Pavia is the closest at 24 minutes, and the furthest, Vicenza, is under 2 hours.

Each line on the map follows the actual railway, and each time is the fastest direct train we found on the Trenitalia timetable for a weekday in November 2026. Regional trains are slower and cheaper than Frecciarossa high-speed trains. Times change on weekends and with the timetable, so check your date before you go.

Almost every trip leaves from Milano Centrale. The exception is Varese, where direct trains leave from Milano Porta Garibaldi.

All 15 day trips: what to see and how to get there

  1. Area · University town

Pavia is a university town on the Ticino river and the closest day trip from Milan. Walk across the Ponte Coperto, the covered bridge, to the Borgo Ticino riverside, then see the Basilica of San Michele Maggiore, where Lombard kings were crowned, the Visconti Castle and the medieval tower houses of the old centre.

Tip: The Certosa di Pavia monastery is about 8 km north of town. It has its own station, Certosa di Pavia, on the regional line.

Boats to Bellagio and the other lake villages leave from the pier in front of Piazza Cavour.

Tip: Como San Giovanni is about 15 minutes on foot from the lake. Trenord trains from Milano Cadorna take about an hour but stop at Como Lago, right on the lakefront.

Before you go

Good to know

Check the train on your date
The times here are the fastest direct trains on a weekday. Weekend and holiday timetables have fewer trains, and timetables change every December and June. Search your date on Trenitalia or Trenord before you go.
Book high-speed trains ahead, not regional ones
Frecciarossa fares go up closer to the day, so book early for Brescia, Turin, Bologna, Verona and Vicenza. Regional trains have a fixed price, so you can buy the ticket on the day.
Validate paper regional tickets
A paper regional ticket is not tied to one train. Stamp it in the machine on the platform before you board, or you can be fined.
Centrale or Porta Garibaldi
Milano Centrale is on metro lines M2 and M3. Porta Garibaldi, for Varese, is one stop from Centrale on the M2 and is also on the M5.
Lake Como by train and ferry
To see more of the lake than Como town, follow our one-day Lake Como itinerary, which goes by ferry to Bellagio, Varenna and Tremezzo.
