A Carmel Market food tour is one of the best ways to spend a few hours in Tel Aviv. You walk, taste, share plates and try things you haven't had before: something salty, something sweet and something to drink along the way.

The idea is not to order a full meal at every stop. Buy one portion to share, everyone gets a bite, and move on. That way there's still room for the Thai banana roti and the ice cream hidden inside a marshmallow.

These are 10 stops for a self-guided food tour of Shuk HaCarmel. The whole route is under 1 km, so you don't have to finish them all. Often the unplanned stop turns out to be the best one of the day.

Shuk HaCarmel tasting route

10 tasting stops in and around the market, from salty street food to desserts. About 800 m of walking in total.

Open route in Google Maps
  1. Start here · Restaurant · Potato on a stick and kubbeh

Sun to Fri 10:00 to 17:15, closed Saturday

Small stall at the southern end of the market selling spiral potatoes on a stick with your choice of seasoning, plus fried kubbeh.

Tip: A spiral potato on a stick is a fun way to start. Pick the seasoning you like, and take one kubbeh to share. Just don't fill up, you've only just started.

  2. Stop 2 · Restaurant · Dumplings

Mon to Fri 11:00 to 17:00, closed Saturday and Sunday

Dumpling counter on the corner of Rambam Street with several fillings and soup dumplings, served with chili sauce on the side.

Tip: For dumpling fans, and for anyone happy to try something new. Choose a filling and ask for the hot sauce on the side. If you order soup dumplings, let them cool first: the inside can be very hot.

  3. Stop 3 · Restaurant · Tacos

    Sun to Thu 12:00 to 23:00, Fri 11:00 to 17:00, Sat 18:00 to 23:00

Popular taco bar at the edge of the market, on HaShomer Street, with small tacos that are easy to share.

Tip: Two tacos are enough for a group tasting. If you don't like it hot, ask for no chili and the sauces on the side. This is exactly the dish not to turn into a meal: a few bites and keep going.

  4. Stop 4 · Restaurant · Pita with everything

Sun to Wed 11:00 to 16:00, Thu 11:00 to 17:00, Fri 10:00 to 16:00, closed Saturday

One of the best-known pita stops in the Carmel Market, with stuffed pitas that are big enough to share.

Tip: Order one pita to share and ask for it with everything (komplet in Hebrew) to taste the full combination, with small changes if someone doesn't like something. Keep napkins close.

  5. Stop 5 · Restaurant · Burika in a pita

Sun to Thu 8:00 to 19:00, Fri 8:00 to 18:00, closed Saturday

Kobi's burika stall in the middle of HaCarmel Street: crispy Tunisian pastry filled with egg and potato, best ordered inside a pita.

Tip: Order the burika inside a pita: the crispy pastry with the soft bread is part of the fun. Share one, and ask for no chili for anyone who doesn't like it hot.

  6. Stop 6 · Restaurant · Khachapuri with an egg

Sun to Tue 8:00 to 18:00, Wed and Thu 8:00 to 24:00, Fri 8:00 to 16:00, closed Saturday

Georgian kitchen on a lane inside the market, known for adjaruli khachapuri: a boat of bread filled with melted cheese and an egg.

Tip: Don't ask them to cut the khachapuri. Tear pieces from the edges and dip them in the egg and cheese in the middle. It's a nice stop to slow down, with everyone reaching for another piece.

  7. Stop 7 · Shop · Surprising drinks

Sun to Thu 8:00 to 19:00, Fri 7:00 to 18:00, closed Saturday

Small grocery on Yom Tov Street with a big fridge of unusual imported drinks and a choice of local craft beers.

Tip: Pick a drink you've seen on TikTok, or find a good local beer you haven't tried. Skip the famous brand: sometimes the unknown bottle is the find of the day.

  8. Stop 8 · Restaurant · Banana roti

    Daily 10:00 to 22:30

Thai street food stall at HaCarmel 5, near the Allenby end of the market, with pad thai and sweet banana roti.

Tip: Time for something sweet after all the salty food. The banana roti comes cut into bite-size pieces, so it's easy to share.

  9. Stop 9 · Café & dessert · Marshmallow ice cream

Sun to Thu 12:00 to 18:30, Fri 10:30 to 16:00, closed Saturday

Dessert stall making ice cream wrapped in a torched marshmallow on a stick.

Tip: A torched marshmallow on a stick with ice cream inside. Most people stare at it for a moment before working out where to start. Eat it straight away, especially on a hot day.

  10. Stop 10 · Café & dessert · Cookie to finish

Mon to Thu 9:00 to 16:30, Fri 8:00 to 16:30, closed Saturday and Sunday

Small bakery on HaShomer Street with a window of big, filled cookies that change daily.

Tip: Finish with an interesting cookie from the window, depending on what's there that day. Share it on the spot, or save it for later if nobody has room for another bite.

Good to know

Come on a weekday
Carmel Market and almost every stop on this route are closed on Saturday. Most stalls close in the late afternoon, and on Friday the market is busiest and closes early. Madhim Sum and Gabby's Goodies are also closed on Sunday.
Share everything
Order one portion per stop for the whole group. Ten stops add up fast, and sharing leaves room for dessert.
Bring water, napkins and patience
It gets hot and crowded between the stalls. Keep water and napkins handy, and give everyone time to choose.
Hours and menus change
Opening hours and menus in the market change often. Check the stops that matter most to you before you go, and leave the rest to whatever catches your eye.
