The 8 gelaterias

Where is the best gelato in Florence? This map shows 8 gelaterias that Florence locals and visitors rate highest, with what to order at each one, exact locations and Google Maps directions.

Near the Duomo, go to My Sugar on Via de' Ginori or Edoardo, the organic gelateria right on Piazza del Duomo. Near Santa Croce, Gelateria dei Neri has one of the biggest flavour lists in town. Across the river in Oltrarno you'll find most of the rest: Gelateria della Passera near the Pitti Palace, which holds Gambero Rosso's top Tre Coni rating, La Sorbettiera by Santo Spirito, Sbrino on Via dei Serragli, La Carraia by Ponte alla Carraia and Cantina del Gelato a few steps from Ponte Vecchio.

Want gelato late? La Carraia and La Sorbettiera stay open until 11:30pm and Sbrino and Gelateria dei Neri until midnight, every day they're open.

How do you spot good gelato in Florence? Look for natural colours (pistachio should be brownish green, not bright) and gelato kept flat in its tins or in covered steel wells, not piled high in mounds.

All 8 gelaterias: details & directions

  1. Café & dessert · Gelateria · San Lorenzo

A small gelateria run by a husband and wife on Via de' Ginori, 5 minutes from the Duomo. Classics like bittersweet chocolate and Bronte pistachio sit next to seasonal fruit and less usual flavours such as green tea and dark chocolate with Chianti wine. Go for the unusual ones.

Tip: Closed on Mondays and Tuesdays (checked November 2026).

  2. Café & dessert · Gelateria · Santo Spirito

Antonio Ciabattoni's gelateria just off Piazza Santo Spirito, the second of his Florence shops after the original in Piazza Tasso. This is where his salted fior di latte, called Oltrarno, was born. Small batches and few flavours, served at the door with a few seats outside.

  3. Café & dessert · Gelateria · Ponte alla Carraia

The most reviewed gelateria in Florence, at the Oltrarno end of Ponte alla Carraia, run since 1990 by twin brothers Massimo and Roberto. Around 40 creamy flavours at good prices, so expect a line on summer evenings. Locals rate the hazelnut and the cheesecake. A second shop is on Via dei Benci in Santa Croce.

Tip: The queue moves fast. If it's too long, the second La Carraia is on Via dei Benci near Santa Croce.

  4. Café & dessert · Gelateria · Santa Croce

A gelateria on Via dei Neri, between the Uffizi and Santa Croce, with a big counter of flavours from chocolate and walnut to mandarin and mint, plus semifreddo and tiramisu. A good stop after the Uffizi.

Tip: Closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays (checked November 2026).

  5. Café & dessert · Gelateria · Pitti Palace

Cinzia Otri's tiny shop on Piazza della Passera, near the Pitti Palace, and the one Gambero Rosso rates highest: Tre Coni in its Gelaterie d'Italia guide (2024 and 2025 editions). Gelato made with biodynamic milk from a local farm and flavours that change with the season. The bitter coffee, made with strong espresso, is a favourite.

Tip: Closed on Mondays. Eat it on the benches in the little square outside.

  6. Café & dessert · Gelateria · Duomo

Organic gelato right on Piazza del Duomo, facing the cathedral. The best gelato near the Duomo if you don't want to walk away from the square. Try the bitter dark chocolate (fondente) or the hazelnut with whole nuts.
